A Statement on the efficacy of VIRUSEND™ Disinfectant spray and the Monkeypox Virus (MPV or MPVX)

We have recently been asked ‘can Virusend disinfectant spray kill the Monkeypox virus?

Monkeypox virus (MPV or MPXV) is a double-stranded DNA zoonotic enveloped virus that causes monkeypox in humans and other animals. It belongs to the genus Orthopoxvirus in the family Poxviridae. It is one of the human orthopoxviruses that includes variola (VARV), cowpox (CPX), and vaccinia (VACV) viruses.

Monkeypox disease is similar to smallpox, but with a milder rash and lower mortality rate. Monkeypox remains endemic in the forests of Central and Western Africa, with sporadic reports of human outbreaks and areas of endemic disease.

The disease can spread to people when they are either bitten or come in the contact with blood and body fluids of animals infected with monkeypox.  More recently cases are now being reported across the UK, Europe and the US and it is being spread by human to human contact.

UK Health Security Agency is warning high-risk close contacts of confirmed Monkeypox cases should isolate for 21 days.

Monkeypox can be passed on by direct contact during sex. A significant proportion of Monkeypox cases have been identified among gay and bisexual men and men who have sex with other men.  It is also not thought to be spread by other close contact through events like nightclubs and festivals. It is also spread through touching surfaces, clothing, bedding or towels used by someone with the infection. Monkeypox can also be contracted through the coughs and sneezes of somebody with the infection.

Virusend disinfectant will kill the Monkey Pox virus on surface, clothing, bedding, towels and soft furnishings in 60 seconds.  Virusend is a powerful weapon when dealing with the Monkeypox virus. 

The Monkeypox virus is an envelope virus like Coronavirus or Small Pox.  VIRUSEND™ has proven efficacy against all Enveloped Viruses  in both suspension (BSEN 14476) and surface testing (BSEN 16777) to >Log 4 (>99.99%).

The Development of VIRUSEND™ Technology

VIRUSEND™ is a rapid surface disinfection spray system developed in conjunction with the British Army to kill SARS-CoV-2 Coronavirus (Covid-19 virus) on high frequency touch points in high use areas, with low health risks. It is designed to be used by individuals to protect themselves during the course of their duties or work. It is certified to kill SARS-CoV-2 Coronavirus (Covid-19 virus) to >99.99% as well as all enveloped viruses; with full spectrum bactericidal efficacy, within one minute to multiple British and European standards.

Many disinfectants on the market make claims to kill viruses but few manage to achieve the internationally recognised British and European Standard BSEN: 16777.  Some even claim they kill viruses because they meet BSEN:14476 however, in and of itself, this test is not a valid test for surface disinfection. Any manufacturer of a surface disinfectant wishing to comply with the British Standards for surface disinfection should make a claim for both BSEN:14476 and BSEN:16777 . If they don’t achieve both standards they should not make a claim for surface disinfection to the Standards.  

Below we have clearly listed where we comply with the British and European Standards.  We ahve also conducted additional testing, the results of which are listed here.  

Testing has been performed at a UKAS approved laboratory, MSL laboratories and the world renowned Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine.

VIRUSEND™ has proven efficacy against all Enveloped Viruses using the Vaccinia surrogate in both suspension (BSEN 14476) and surface testing (BSEN 16777) to >Log 4 (>99.99%).  It was also tested against a Coronavirus (feline coronavirus) which is validated for EN test methods. In addition it has also been tested on the live pandemic strain of the Coronavirus. Please see below.

Pandemic Strain Testing of SARS-CoV-2 (REMRQ0001/HUMAN VIRUS/2020/LIVERPOOL)

VIRUSEND™ was tested by The Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine (LSTM), on a live human strain of the SARS-CoV-2 Coronavirus to BSEN:14476 and BSEN:16777 standards. LSTM certified VIRUSEND™ kills >99.99% SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus on hard surfaces in 1 minute.

The Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine Report Conclusions

Research has shown that SARS-CoV-2 can remain viable on surfaces, notably plastic and stainless steel for up to 72 hours post inoculation, and in aerosols for at least 3 hours . This survivability means that transmission can occur both through aerosols and fomites. Therefore, good hygiene and environmental decontamination is crucial in helping to prevent the spread of COVID-19. It is also important we ensure disinfectants being used are effective in inactivating SARS-CoV-2 specifically.

Here we have shown through inactivation assays that TX-10 (VIRUSEND) is highly effective at reducing SARS-CoV-2 titre when in direct contact with the virus. Assays show that VIRUSEND is able to reduce virus titre by at least 4.0log10, a significant reduction in viral titre, making VIRUSEND TX- 10 comparable to potent surface disinfectants such as formaldehyde (0.7-0.1%) or ethanol (78-95%). This significant reduction is seen within 1 minute of contact with virus inoculum meaning VIRUSEND is highly effective in inactivating SARS-CoV-2.
