FAQs

These Statements are advisory only but should help you complete your COSHH sheets.

With regard to section 6 of the Virusend MSDS, this relates to the cleaning up of spillages following accidental release. The MSDS is by its nature generic and as such must take account of a range of scenario’s which is why we use the phrase “as appropriate” when describing the use of PPE for clean-up of spills. This is because a spill could be an accident regarding a pallet loads of stock in a warehouse or in transit, flooding a floor with ruptured cans, or one can, it is important therefore to consider what is a measured approach when cleaning up a spill and this does not necessarily reflect the PPE which should be worn during normal use of the product. Virusend is sold in cans with a small volume which limits the volumes associated with accidental release, it is propelled by compressed air, it is also not flammable and contains no volatile components so there is no risk of the build-up of harmful or flammable vapours, mist formation can occur.

Healthcare environments

In principle in a healthcare environment our expectation is that most users will be wearing gloves as a precaution against transmission of infection, this will also provide protection for the hands from prolonged contact with the Virusend. We would recommend eye protection/safety glasses where eye contact is possible, for example if spraying overhead or in enclosed spaces. It would not be necessary under normal conditions of use, to use respiratory protection as the mist from spraying is being directed away form the body. It is heavy and will fall to the floor which very much reduces the potential for inhalation, even when used repeatedly. The use of a suitable mask if working in enclosed spaces or overhead should be considered and a dust mask should be sufficient in such conditions.

With regard to the DNEL’s (Derived No Effect Level), these work very much like WEL’s and set a limit of exposure in the workplace. We would advise for completeness that they are included in any COSHH assessment.

Does VIRUSEND™ kill the Covid-19 Coronavirus?

VIRUSEND™ was tested by The Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine (LSTM), on a live human strain of the SARS-CoV-2 Coronavirus (REMRQ0001/HUMAN VIRUS/2020/LIVERPOOL) to BSEN:14476 and BSEN:16777 standards. LSTM certified VIRUSEND™ kills >99.99% SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus on hard surfaces in 1 minute.

To quote the Liverpool School directly they said:

We have shown through inactivation assays that TX-10 (VIRUSEND) is highly effective at reducing SARS-CoV-2 titre when in direct contact with the virus. Assays show that VIRUSEND is able to reduce virus titre by at least 4.0log10, a significant reduction in viral titre, making VIRUSEND TX- 10 comparable to potent surface disinfectants such as formaldehyde (0.7-0.1%) or ethanol (78-95%). This significant reduction is seen within 1 minute of contact with virus inoculum meaning VIRUSEND is highly effective in inactivating SARS-CoV-2.  For further information click here.

Is VIRUSEND Anti Bacterial?

VIRUSEND™ is a full spectrum bactericide and has been specifically formulated to kill all bacteria to >99.99%.  It meets all British and European Standards.  For further information click here. Remember if a surface disinfectant makes a claim to kill 99.9% it does meet any British or European Standards and you should avoid using it.

Where’s the proof?

Virusend has been tested by the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine to the following British and European standards EN: 14476, EN: 16777 and is certified to kill >99/99% SARS-CoV-2 Coronavirus in 1 minute. Please click here for more details.

My suppliers tell me that BSEN:14476 is the right standard for viruses, what’s the right answer?

Your supplier is incorrect.  A claim under BSEN:14776, in and of itself, is not a valid test for surface disinfection. Any manufacturer of a surface disinfectant must comply with both BSEN:14776 and BSEN:16777 to make a valid legal claim against viruses. If they don’t achieve both standards they should not make a claim and you should not use their products!

My suppliers tell me that their product has been tested against SARS-CoV-2?

There are very few Laboratories around the world offering this test as it has to be conducted in a Biosecurity Level 3 Laboratory.  It should also be conducted according to BSEN:14476 and BSEN:16777 to be valid.  Virusend has been tested on the Live Strain of SARS-CoV-2 at the BSL 3 labs at Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine.

Other coronavirus are not SARS-CoV-2 and there for suppliers cannot and should not make the specific claim for a kill of SARS-CoV-2.

Has Virusend been approved for use as a hand sanitiser?

No.  Virusend is designed as a multi surface disinfect spray and not a hand sanitiser.

How can I protect my work place?

Companies in the UK have a vicarious liability to protect their staff and customers under the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 legislation.

Before this pandemic hit the UK, we did not understand how do deal with the virus, but now we do.

In addition to Coronavirus being transmitted directly; person to person transmission, we know that surfaces will harbour the Coronavirus for up to 72 hours. This makes the workplace a particular hot spot for secondary transmission events to staff and customers, meaning it is all the more important for employers to discharge their duties fully, by disinfecting these surfaces on a regular basis with a product that meets the necessary standards.

If products are used that don’t meet the standards it exposes employers to the potential for legal actions and prosecution.

Is VIRUSEND suitable to be sprayed on fabrics or clothing and other surfaces ?

Unlike many other disinfectants, VIRUSEND is not a bleach or alcohol based product and therefore should not bleach or stain fabrics.  It is safe to use on all surfaces including fabrics and clothing.  We recommend you do not spray on clothing that is being worn as spray could be inhaled. You should avoid unsealed surfaces; such as wood, untreated leather, paint and electrical surfaces. You should test on an inconspicuous place first!  Use only as directed. Also see Question below: Do I need to wipe off VIRUSEND™?

Do I need to wipe off VIRUSEND™?

We advise wiping off after spraying on food preparation surfaces or surface where Virusend is sprayed on multiple times (such as door handles). Remember, be sure to wait 1 minute for VIRUSEND™ to work before wiping off with a damp cloth. Like most disinfectants Virusend is not suitable for use on painted surfaces. If you do spray onto paintwork it should be wiped off with a damp cloth.  To disinfect a door handle without getting Virusend onto the paintwork simply spray a good amount of Virusend onto a cloth and wipe the for handle.  Leave it for 1 minute to work and simple wipe off with a damp cloth.  The same goes for light switches.

It is important in high use areas where VIRUSEND is to be applied multiple times that it must be wiped off with a damp cloth after 1 minute. If not, this could result in a residue build-up.  If using on brass or other metal door furniture ensure you wipe off all surfaces after 1 min with a damp cloth. Like most disinfectants Virusend is not suitable for use on painted surfaces and should be wiped off. If not, this could result in residue build-up and or staining.

How often should/can I apply Virusend?

Virusend has been designed to be used on a regular basis.  Spray onto the surface you want to disinfect, wait 1 minute and that’s it.  It is important in high use areas where Virusend is to be applied multiple times that it must be wiped off with a damp cloth after 1 minute. See Question above – Do I need to wipe off Virusend™?.

It is only necessary to reapply when the surface could have become re-contaminated, for instance your workspace, kettle, door handle or light switch has been used by someone else.

Can I use VIRUSEND™ spray on food preparation surfaces?

Yes! VIRUSEND™ should not be ingested directly, but is perfectly safe to use on food preparation surfaces. Spray directly onto the surface, wait 1 minute and simply wipe off with a damp cloth.

What surface area will Virusend cover and how long does it last?

Virusend will cover between 23 and 30 square meters, depending on user application.  The 365ml version will produce 4.5 to 5 minutes of continuous spray.

Can I spray disinfectant into the air and walk through the mist?

No. VIRUSEND is designed to be used on surface only. It should not be used to spray individuals or intentionally inhaled. There are limits for all chemicals set for things like skin contact or inhallation.  These are know as DNEL’s (Derived No Effect Level), which set a limit of exposure in the workplace.  It would not be necessary under normal conditions of use, to use respiratory protection as the mist from spraying is directed away from the users, is heavy (compared to a gas generated particle such as butane) and will fall which reduces the potential for inhalation, even when used repeatedly.

Can I use VIRUSEND™ on floors?

If using on floors, steps or other foot traffic areas, you must wipe off after 1 minute to avoid any potential slip hazards.

What surfaces should I not use VIRUSEND™ on?

You should avoid unsealed wood, paint or electrical components. It is safe to use on vehicle paint and similar painted surfaces.

How does VIRUSEND™ kill more than 99.99% of viruses?

VIRUSEND™ is a unique patent pending formulation designed to specifically target this new strain of Coronavirus.  Developed in conjunction with the British Army, VIRUSEND™ has been tested by an authorised UKAS laboratory and has passed all relevant British and European Standards. For more information about standards, please click HERE.

Do you test VIRUSEND™ on animals?

We are cruelty free and never test on animals.

Is VIRUSEND™ safe to use around pets and children?

If used according to usage instructions, VIRUSEND™ is safe around children. There is a lock specifically designed to stop young children from using the spray. Do not spray animals with Virusend.

When spraying childrens toys or other artiles that children may play with/lick, ensure to thoroughly rinse off before allowing them to play with them. Virusend should not be ingested.

When our products are used correctly, they may be safe to use around pets. However, do not allow pets to lick or walk over wet and freshly disinfected surfaces. Ensure to thoroughly rinse off feeding bowls/toys before handing them back to your pet. Use disinfectants safely. Always read the label and product information before use.

Can VIRUSEND™ be sprayed on to food packaging and left to dry?

Virusend may be sprayed directly onto fully enclosed food packaging.  Take care not to spray it into packaging with holes in such as plastic punnets of grapes.  Virusend should not be spray directly onto food.

Can I spray VIRUSEND™ directly onto my keyboard or mobile phone?

Virusend may be sprayed directly onto keyboards, phones etc but you must only apply a quick light mist.  This is important so as not to soak the device with liquid and risk damaging the device.  If you are unsure we recommend spraying directly onto a  cloth and then wiping the device with that.  Remember just wait 60 seconds.  Either leave to dry or simply wipe off with a damp cloth.  We cannot accept liability for over application of the spray onto electrical equipment.

Can I take Virusend on an aeroplane?

Our Virusend 75ml Travel size is perfectly safe to take on board an aeroplane.  For the other sizes they must be put in hold luggage.

What is the Expiry Date for Virusend
Virusend is effective for 18 months beyond the expiry date printed on the can.  It was originally set shorter whilst awaiting full long term stability testing.
If your expiry date states Oct 2022 that is now effective to April 2024.
Does Virusend remain active on the surface after spraying?

While the active ingredients will remain active on the surface for some time after application there is no internationally recognised standard for testing or validating any such claims, so we do not make them.

Is VIRUSEND™ an aerosol?

Yes, however 95% of aerosols are propelled by Propane or Butane which are dangerous and flammable. They are also a major contributor to global warming and we hate them. VIRUSEND™ is propelled by compressed fresh air – no nasty VOCs and no flammable gasses.

What do I do with my empty canister?

Our bottle are made from 100% pure aluminium.  This is a highly valuable material in the recycling chain and is always reprocessed to make other products.  Simply remove the trigger for reuse & recycle the aluminium can & orange protective cap. So much better for the environment.

Have any fragrances been added to Virusend?

No.  We do not add any fragrances to Virusend.

Is VIRUSEND™ ok to use in vehicles?

Virusend I fine to use in vehicles.  As a vehicle is classed as an enclosed space you must be careful not to breath in the spray.  Virusend is not a glass cleaner so we recommend if you want to use it on your glass that you then remove any residue with a specific glass cleaner.

People generally don’t like using Aerosols in vehicles normally for 3 reasons:

  1. The Propellants are VOC’s and cause air pollution.
  2. The VOC is highly flammable and there is a flammable explosive risk. (Car temperatures can reach over 50oC in summer)
  3. Inhalation of VOC’s used in aerosols such as butane and propane in enclosed spaces causes a risk of sudden death. (see: com)
  • Virusend uses Compresses Air as the propellant
  • There are no VOC’s in Virusend
  • Virusend is not flammable
  • Virusend is the first aerosol product to be allowed back into the NHS on this basis.
Can I use the large refills cans to fill the travel size sprays?

The Refill cans have been specifically designed to be used with the Large 365ml Complete System and Trigger.

Is VIRUSEND™ a cleaner and a disinfectant?

Virusend can be used as a surface cleaner.  If the surface is dirty, use Virusend to help lift off the dirt and wipe the surface clean.  Then simply spray a light mist onto the cleaned surface, wait 60 seconds and wipe off as necessary.

What is the difference between a clean and a dirty surface?

Cleaning is a relative term. ‘A clean surface’ In the context of using a disinfectant relates to how it was tested.  When performing an EN test for disinfection, 2 type of circumstances can be chosen.  Clean or Dirty conditions.  Dirty relates to the organic load on the surface to be disinfected.  In Virusend’s case the load is (0,3 g/l) bovine serum albumin.  The surface tested is considered ‘dirty’ to the extent that it has an organic load on it.  It is not dirty compared to an organic load of (3.0 g/l) bovine serum albumin which is used to represent dirty conditions in hospitals for instance.

What is a UFI Number and does VIRUSEND™ have one?

The unique formula identifier, known by its acronym UFI, is 16-character code that will be required on the label of products that contain a hazardous mixture.  Disinfectant fall under this catagory.  Our UFI is: TE6F-C0J8-Y000- UGA4.

Help for those responsible for The control of substances Hazardous to Health Regulations 2002 (COSHH)

It is the responsibility of the employer to ensure that a COSHH assessment is conducted and to ensure that this reflects the actual use of the product taking into account local factors relating to the task, and others who might be exposed in the vicinity.

How does VIRUSEND manage to work upside down?

VIRUSEND™ licences ANYWAY spray technology.   This clever technology is centred around the internal dip tube.  Standard dip tubes have a hole at the end. ANYWAY spray tubes are sealed at the end.  Instead they have millions of nano holes up and down their length.  The material is a special material that only allows liquid to pass in preference to gas.  So long as the liquid is touching any part of the tube it will work.

This is ideal for spraying those awkward hard to reach place such as underneath desks, door handles, hand rails etc. For more information on ANYWAY spray click here.

Why do you have a lifetime warranty on the trigger?

We love the environment we live in.  We thought, if we can design things that don’t need to be thrown away then we should.  Our trigger system has been highly engineered to last a lifetime.  When you run out of VIRUSEND simply pop the Trigger off and snap it onto your new replacement cartridge, simple.

My Trigger/Travel spray has stopped working, how do I solve this?

Sometimes, when your bottle has been left standing for some time the trigger can stop working.  This is caused by liquid inside the very small nozzle drying out and blocking the flow. There is an easy way to solve this.

Trigger – Complete Systems

Firstly remove your trigger. Boil the kettle and put the trigger in a mug. Pour the boiled water over the trigger to cover it.  Leave for 5 mins.  Maybe make yourself a cuppa while you wait.

Remove the trigger from the water taking care not to scold yourself and then reattach your trigger to the virusend can. Give it a few blasts of the trigger and this will solve your problem.  Sometimes you may need to do this a couple of times for it to fully clear.

Our triggers are also dishwasher safe and so this might be an option for you if you have the time.

Travel Size

Boil a kettle. Fill the mug with about 1.5 inches of boiling water and put the Travel size bottle spray, nozzle first into the mug. Leave for 5 mins.  Maybe make yourself a cuppa while you wait. Remove the Travel size bottle from the water taking care not to scold yourself. Leave for 2 minutes to cool down. Give it a few blasts of spray and this will solve your problem.  Sometimes you may need to do this a couple of times for it to fully clear.

Our Triggers come with a lifetime warranty so if you are still experiencing issues please call our customer service team (+ 44 (0)1206 638466) who will be able to assist you further and if needed send you a replacement Trigger free of charge.

How do I register for a lifetime trigger warranty?

Simply scan the QR code or register by clicking HERE. You can also register multiple bottles by simply repeating the process or by adding ‘,’ or ‘-‘ in-between the code numbers.

Do I need to wear a mask when using Virusend?

It would not be necessary under normal conditions of use, to use respiratory protection as the mist from spraying is being directed away form the body. It is heavy and will fall to the floor which very much reduces the potential for inhalation, even when used repeatedly. The use of a suitable mask if working in enclosed spaces or overhead should be considered and a dust mask should be sufficient in such conditions.
